How Nether Portal Coordinates Work
The Nether and the Overworld don’t share the same coordinate scale. Every block you travel in the Nether equals 8 blocks of travel in the Overworld. This is called the 8:1 ratio, and it’s the mechanic this calculator is built on.
Here’s the math:
- Overworld → Nether: Divide your X and Z by 8
- Nether → Overworld: Multiply your X and Z by 8
- Y coordinate (your height): Never changes — it stays the same in both dimensions
So if your Overworld portal is at X=800, Z=−400, the correct Nether portal position is X=100, Z=−50. That’s it. The calculator above handles this instantly for any coordinates you type in.
Why Portals End Up in the Wrong Place
This is the most common frustration with Nether portals, and it’s not a bug — it’s how the game works. When you step through a portal, Minecraft doesn’t teleport you to an exact coordinate. Instead, it searches for any existing portal within a radius around your calculated destination. In Java Edition, that search radius is 128 blocks in the Nether — which equals 1,024 Overworld blocks. In Bedrock Edition, the search radius is 128 blocks in either dimension.
If there’s already a portal anywhere inside that radius, Minecraft links to it instead of creating a new one. That’s why you sometimes come out somewhere completely unrelated to where you went in.

- Build both portals yourself. Travel to the output coordinates in the Nether and build the frame manually. Don’t let the game auto-generate it.
- Space multiple portals properly. If you’re running more than one Overworld portal, keep them at least 1,024 Overworld blocks apart on Java, or 128 blocks apart on Bedrock, to avoid them linking to the same Nether portal.
- Light the Nether side first. Build and light the Nether-side portal at the calculated position first, then go back and light the Overworld side. This gives Minecraft a clean, deliberate pair to link.

Getting your coordinates in Java Edition
Press F3 while standing at the spot where you want to build. Your X, Y, and Z values appear on the left side of the debug screen. Stand inside the portal frame footprint — not beside it — so the coordinates are accurate to where the portal will actually sit.
Getting your coordinates in Bedrock Edition
Go to Settings → Game → Show Coordinates. Your coordinates will appear in the top-left corner of your screen at all times. Same rule applies — stand inside the intended frame position before you note them down.

One Bedrock-specific quirk worth knowing: there’s a known bug where performing an action — eating, using an item, opening inventory — while the portal transition is playing can shift your exit coordinates slightly. Obsidian Requirements by Portal Size
The minimum portal frame is 4 blocks wide × 5 blocks tall and requires 10 obsidian. In Java Edition, the corner blocks are optional and can be any material. In Bedrock Edition, all frame blocks must be obsidian.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Y coordinate change between the Overworld and Nether?
No. Height stays exactly the same in both dimensions. Only X and Z are scaled by the 8:1 ratio. If you enter a portal at Y=64, you arrive in the Nether at Y=64 — assuming valid space exists at that height on the Nether side.
What if there’s already a block or lava at my calculated Nether coordinates?

Do negative coordinates work the same way?
